Raising your children the right way!
It is difficult to find good caregivers because parents don’t want to trust their child with just anyone. For this reason, many look into their relatives for help. In theory, caregivers of any age can take good care of the child. But it is also important to make sure that the person you trust have basic first aid knowledge and is in good physical condition to meet the challenges of parenting.
Pros:
· A family member is more likely to love your child compared to a non-relative
· The child can develop a long-lasting bond with the relative which can be good for them both
· Older family members are already experienced in child care
· Flexible about the hours
· Willing to drop and get the child from school
· Will look after the child when he’s sick
· Continuity of care
· Relatives most likely live nearby
Cons
· The relative may become physically exhausted from taking care of the child particularly if the relative is of older age
· May have commitments that cannot be disrupted
· Different ideas about homework, discipline, and obedience
· May not get to socially interact with kids their age if the grandparent feels uncomfortable attending events with younger parents
· If something goes wrong, getting a family member as a caregiver can potentially bring long-term rifts in the family
Being a parent can be challenging, so on my blog TodaysParent I hope that I will be able to provide some parenting insights from one parent to another.
