Raising your children the right way!
Teens are at the stage in their lives when they are still discovering their identity. This means that they are easily influenced by their peers, hormones, and ideals. It is important for them to learn self-control at this time because a small mistake during the teen years can have a great impact on the rest of his life.
Begin by asking questions – asking your child about his stance on moral issues and dilemmas will let him think about the consequences on his actions. You can also ask him about another person’s feelings if ever they are treated in a particularly nasty manner. Remember not to take this opportunity to teach though, the teen can figure out what is right or wrong and his answers to your questions will echo in his mind every time a challenging situation arises. What he does in the situation will be up to him.
Point out their success – you should encourage your teen every time they make a good decision; focus on the positive, not on the negative. Teens, just like children and adults, want to be praised and this kind of affirmation will motivate them to think before they act and make good decisions.
Being a parent can be challenging, so on my blog TodaysParent I hope that I will be able to provide some parenting insights from one parent to another.
